Tips For Tracing Your Family Heritage
Recently I’ve been asked a lot of questions on how to get started tracing family heritage. Many of my customers are interested in creating a Digital Heritage StoryBook or even a Traditional Album regarding their family heritage. So I decided to take a look at this to see if I could provide you all with a little assistance in getting started. Recently genealogist, Maureen Taylor appeared on NBC’s Today Show, and she had some wonderful tips to help us all get started.
According to Taylor, the first step to building a family tree is to ask your oldest living relatives lots of questions about relatives’ names, locations, death information and so on. Keeping good records is key. From there, she advises, go online for further exploration. Here are a few online resources* Taylor suggests:
· Ancestry.com
· Footnote.com
· Familysearch.org
· Geneologybank.com
· Deadfred.com
*Note: some sites are free; other sites you can search for free, but some may require a monthly or annual subscription to access information.
Additional internet resources: National Library of Congress, WorldVitalRecords.com and CyndisList.com.
In addition, Taylor, who also does photo interpretation, says there are clues in your old photos that you can identify by looking closely at items in the photos such as clothing, furniture and signs. You can find additional information on Taylor’s Web Site, photodetective.com.
